چکیده

[1] The low frequency variability of the near surface temperature in a climate simulation is compared with Greenland ice core dO time series during the holocene. The simulation is performed with the coupled CSIRO atmosphere-ocean model under present-day conditions. The variability, analyzed by the detrended fluctuation analysis, reveals power-law scaling of the power-spectrum for frequency f, S(f) f , and long term memory (LTM) given by b > 0. The near surface temperature shows intense LTM in the North Atlantic south of Greenland, weak LTM in parts of the Antarctic ocean and the tropical Atlantic, and no LTM in the Pacific ocean. The power-law exponent b 0.5 near Greenland agrees with ice core temperature proxies up to time scales of 1000 years. The LTM of the surface temperature is explained by the high low frequency variability of the zonally averaged streamfunction in the Atlantic with maxima in the Arctic ocean. Citation: Blender, R., K. Holocene climate variability on millennial scales recorded in Greenland ice cores

Climate variability is triggered by several solar and orbital cycles as well as by the intern ocean dynamics. Consequently, paleoclimate proxy records are expected to vary on very different time scales ranging from subdecadal to millennial duration. We demonstrate, that Foster’s (Foster, 1996) wavelet analysis technique is an appropriate tool for investigating temporarily changing spectral prop...

Characterization of Millennial-Scale Climate Variability

The oxygen isotope time series from ice cores in central Greenland [the Greenland Ice Sheet Project 2 (GISP2) and the Greenland Ice Core Project (GRIP)] and West Antarctica (Byrd) provide a basis for evaluating the behavior of the climate system on millennial time scales. These time series have been invoked as evidence for mechanisms such as an interhemispheric climate seesaw or a stochastic re...

Timing of millennial-scale climate change in Antarctica and Greenland during the last glacial period.

A precise relative chronology for Greenland and West Antarctic paleotemperature is extended to 90,000 years ago, based on correlation of atmospheric methane records from the Greenland Ice Sheet Project 2 and Byrd ice cores. Over this period, the onset of seven major millennial-scale warmings in Antarctica preceded the onset of Greenland warmings by 1500 to 3000 years. In general, Antarctic temp...

Synchronous climate changes in antarctica and the north atlantic

Central Greenland ice cores provide evidence of abrupt changes in climate over the past 100,000 years. Many of these changes have also been identified in sedimentary and geochemical signatures in deep-sea sediment cores from the North Atlantic, confirming the link between millennial-scale climate variability and ocean thermohaline circulation. It is shown here that two of the most prominent Nor...

Greenland—Antarctic phase relations and millennial time-scale climate fluctuations in the Greenland ice-cores

The Greenland (GRIP/GISP2) and Antarctic (Byrd) ice-cores are examined in the frequency domain, with the data synchronized using common methane variations. Using conventional time-series analysis, a simple picture emerges: there is low-frequency (periods longer than about 10 kyr) coherence between the two records, consistent with a simple time delay, Antarctica leading by 1– 2 kyr: Two geograph...
